I want to read the shorter, cut down versions of these sometime — I read a couple when Principkanti was doing my GCSEs or something, and I loved the writing. I certainly enjoyed reading this I came across this and the version published originally called What we talk about when we talk about love and thought it would be interesting to read them side by side.

Carver was born into a poverty-stricken family at the tail-end of the Depression. I farver that being middle class in America through the s and s was tough and these stories are wonderfully American and nuanced but there was something missing in all of them that hooked me as a true Carver fan.


A book of Raymond Carver stories, so of course the writing is amazing. Then with my next thought I understood clearly that I couldn’t do that.

Alas, I am not a short story lover so just read a few and moved on. They are beautifully written, often disturbing and sometimes depressing. Constantly struggling to support his wife and family, Carver enrolled in a writing programme under author John Gardner in Carver writes with meticulous economy, suddenly bringing a life into focus in a similar way to the paintings of Edward Hopper.
