All the characters were fully realised and the scenes were rendered so well that you could almost visualise yourself right there with them. Unlike Jack, Olivia trusts his honor implicitly, so when she finds him injured in a battlefield wearing an enemy uniform, she immediately knows there’s more to the tale and convinces her friends to help him. I think there were three love scenes. In fact, he can’t remember anything of the last five years. A past in which, as he learns slowly during his recovery from amnesia, includes him believing lies about her and subsequently throwing him out on her PREGNANT behind.
I only planned really to read this one because this was recommended as one of the plots I like, but now am curious about the rest of the series.
Brilliantly written, you are immediately transferred into the Napoleonic era and swept into a mystery where Jacks actions are questionable. This book felt more like a historical fiction in some areas, which I have to say I didn’t mind – although I am an avid reader of historical fiction so maybe that was why? And it truly does END there, for before the honeymoon is over Jack begins to listen to all the nasty things his family says about Olivia and ultimately ruins her completely through a scandalous divorce.

There was a lot going on, and it was a bit like a mystery unraveling. Where’s the the need for vengence for the incredibly crappy position she was put in? Her strength and devotion was staggering. And a cousin bent on having all that Jack owned even Olivia herself? View all 11 comments. Especially, a good laugh!
I was ready to forgive him for the divorce, but then he started to remember his affair with Mimi.
It’s well written and I will definitely keep an eye out for another Eileen Dreyer, but wanting to smother the H or, hey, have him get falsely accused then hung or is it hanged for treason, oh the irony, has me rate it at 2 stars. I guess it’s because it’s so obvious that the H adores her to distraction that makes it more beautiful than me wanting to shout at her “don’t be such an idiot! Two of them were flashbacks to their marriage, and one of those was fileen quickie, while the other gets interrupted before the end.

Apr 28, Lzdy. As one of the great secondary characters says, the H “failed at his first fence”. Nothing really set this book apart from anything else on the shelves. Earl Drake has a group of men, spies, he calls Drake’s Rakes, but again, nothing is really said about it, even though it’s the name of the series.

I am sad to say that we have very different tastes. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down.
Was all done so well, I just had a hard time putting this book down, wanting to find out what happens next! The central theme revolves around the breach of trust that occurs when the H trusts this reprehensible character, rather than the dreyerr.

The h should not have forgiven him that! Barely a lady is a novel your won’t soon forget. Talk barly an emotional train wreck. Then she stumbles over Jack on the battlefield of Waterloo, and he becomes an even more dangerous secret.
